SYRACUSE NOTTINGHAM – The Sherburne-Earlville co-ed swim team participated in the Section III, Class C championship. They crowned a sectional champion and their two relay teams advanced to the state qualifiers in a sixth place finish as a team.

Junior Amon Van Alst helped lead both relay teams while setting up a nice performance for himself in his respective individual events. Amon, along with Robert Schaefer, Ava Flanagan, and Emma Crespi, achieved a third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:59.06. Ava, Emma, Avon, and Parker McCracken came in sixth in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:51.99).

Individually, Amon Van Alst set a new school record in the 200 yard Individual Medley event as he swam it in 2:09.43 for second place. He surpassed Dillon Moyer’s 2:10.38 in 2013. Amon became a sectionals champion for a top finish in the 500 yard freestyle. He swam the event in 5:13.21 and became the first S-E Swimmer to win a sectional class title since Gavin Lopata in 2015.

Amon and the freestyle relay teams will return to Nottingham this afternoon at the Section III State Qualifiers. Amon is seeded 12th out of 48 swimmers in the 200 IM while being fourth out of 45 for the 500 freestyle.

Good luck to all swimmers.
