OXFORD — There is always something fun for families to enjoy at the Oxford Memorial Library, located at 8 Forthill Park in Oxford.

Every fourth Friday of the month, the library hosts Family Movie Night. Local families are invited to cozy up in the library's community room, where the movie will be played on a big screen. This month's movie is "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile," and will be shown at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, January 27.

"We have a big screen and projector in the community room, and we have a movies license to show the movies, and we just pop some popcorn, give them drinks, and set up the movie. They can sit on the floor or sit in a chair and watch a movie," said Oxford Memorial Library Youth Services and Programming Coordinator Jessica Tefft.

Popcorn and other snacks and drinks are provided, but attendees are welcome to bring their own as well.

"We're not sticklers here," joked Tefft, adding that the snacks and drinks provided at Family Movie Nights are donated. "Because of the way funding is set up we cannot purchase food and drinks with our funding. So any food and drinks that are purchased are through donations either by the staff, volunteers, or the community itself. So if they give us donations we can go and purchase snacks."

For those who would like to help, donations will be accepted during Family Movie Night to go toward the purchase of snacks and drinks for future events.

In addition to the free family movies, the Oxford Memorial Library also offers Family Night on the first Thursday of each month. During Family Night, attendees can enjoy fun activities and crafts such as creating their own bird feeders, which will be the activity at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 2.

"We’re going to have a bird feeder craft night. I do this every February because there’s the Great Backyard Bird Count that the Audubon Society puts on," Tefft explained. "You sit and you count and listen and see how many of each different kind of species there is and you record it, and then you log in and you add that to their website, and it helps scientists record migration and what birds are in the area."

Tefft said two types of bird feeders will be available to craft: pipe cleaners strung with cheerios, which can be formed into whatever shape the crafter would like, as well as milk jug bird seed holders that attendees can color with markers.

"We keep it pretty simple but everybody has a lot of fun," said Tefft.

Activities for each month's Family Night will be posted on the Oxford Memorial Library and Youth Services Facebook page.

On the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m., the Oxford Memorial Library hosts Family Game Night as well.

Tefft said a local game enthusiast brings in newer games to set up for others to play. Additionally, the library has its own supply of games that are available for library visitors to enjoy.

"We also have a closet in house that has been donated [with] different board games that if you want to come while the library’s open you can use them, which we’re trying to push that right now because a lot of people are cold or bored," said Tefft. "They can just come into the library and play the games or they can come on Family Game Night and play games with us. We set it up and try to make it fun. It’s just starting to take off."

The Oxford Memorial Library is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and closed Sundays.
