NEW BERLIN – The Greene Trojans girls basketball team faced two tough competitors in the UV Holiday basketball tournament, but shook them off to become champions and to stay undefeated. Greene faced a strong Sherburne-Earlville team, but second half efforts led Greene to a 50-40 victory.

After S-E’s three powerhouses on defense limited Unadilla Valley, Greene knew they had to stop Hannah Todd-Rogers, Trinity Thornton, and Abby Shaver, which they did. The Trojans offense was able to move around and find rhythm early on. They posted 20 points in the second half, which set up a 31-28 lead at halftime and never trailed again.

Payton Yahner did not let her team down as she earned a well-deserved MVP award for her 25 points. Molly Cornell also contributed to a big second quarter for the Trojans with nine points off the bench. Cornell’s efforts led her to an all-tournament team honor.

Hannah Todd-Rogers did find room to lead the Marauders with 10 points in the contest, but it was Alex Grzymkowski who scored a team-high of 12 points, including seven points in the first quarter. Trinity Thornton knocked down two three’s to finish with eight points in the loss. Todd-Rogers and Thornton picked up All-tournament honors following the game.
