NORWICH – The Norwich Purple Tornado wrestling team hosted Owego on Tuesday, where they fell short 33-25. Norwich turned things around on Wednesday against Chenango Valley, where they won in the final match 40-36.

Tuesday’s top performances for Norwich were from Mason Edwards, Maverick Beckwith, and Yanni Drapaniotis. Edwards won his match fiercely with a quick seven second pin on Owego’s John Swackhammer. The 172 pound Senior has a 7-0 record through four contests.

Maverick Beckwith competed against RaeAnn Craft in the 110 weight class where he won on an 18-4 major decision. He is 9-1 to start the season with his only loss coming against Carthage in the Clyde Cole Tournament.

Yanni Drapaniotis won on a 10-3 decision against Cam Card and has started his freshman year on a high note. Along with Beckwith, he also stands tall with a 9-1 record.

Other notable matches include Norwich’s Nate Murphy defeating Jozsiah Varga-Flynn in the 152 weight class in a 5-1 decision. Nikko Derensis also won his match in a 5-3 decision against Collin Brink.

On Wednesday, there were only four matches that took place, while the rest were forfeits. In the 138 match, Chenango Valley’s Trevor Cortright defeated Nikko Derensis with a pin in the third period. The Warriors also picked up points as Cooper Jones pinned Cyrus Graham in 24 seconds while Kyle Whitmarsh pinned Evan Heath in 32 seconds.

Norwich and CV were neck and neck before the final match in the 132 weight class. Regan Roach helped the Purple Tornado achieve the overall victory with a major 13-4 decision against Connor Mika.

Norwich is currently 6-2 overall to start the 2022 season while being 1-1 in the STAC East divisional standings.

Norwich will be participating in the Windsor Christmas tournament on December 28.
