CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango Bird Club will be meeting September 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne.

After a brief meeting there will be a presentation by Jody Enck: “What Makes a Birder a Birder?”

Jody Enck, PhD, Avian biologist and social scientist, has applied identity theory to the study of people who enjoy interacting with birds.    He has found up to 14 specific identity types who gain a variety of meanings from their relationship with birds.

Story Continues Below Adverts

Interestingly, behaviors are poor indicators of these identity types because different people can participate in the same activity for different purposes. This is not a wonky, “sciency” talk, but rather a fun exploration of what it means to be a birder.

The Bird Club will be celebrating it's 40th anniversary in 2023.  Meetings are normally held at Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne, inside the Visitor's Center.

Meetings are the second Wednesday of the month,  at 6:30 p.m., starting with a brief business meeting, and followed with various presentations of interest to both birders and general nature enthusiasts.

Upcoming programs are: Oct 12th, eBird Basics with Mike DeWispeleare; Nov 9th, Rick Bunting's 2022 program and photos and our Friend of Birds Award and Dec 14th, Christmas Bird Count planning and Mike D's photos from 2022. Newcomers are welcome.
