CHENANGO COUNTY — A severe thunderstorm tore through Chenango County on Sunday, leaving many areas without power and several local roads impassable.

The storm brought heavy rains and winds through the area, which led to snapped tree limbs, knocked down power lines, and even ripped down some traffic lights.

According to the Chenango County Emergency Operations Center, the areas hit the hardest by the storm were the Villages of Oxford and Sherburne, but several municipalities in the county are reporting widespread power outages.

The Chenango County Emergency Operations Center said approximately 95 percent of the Town and Village of Smyrna is without power, and about half of the residences in the Towns of Norwich, Oxford, McDonough, Pharsalia, Preston, and Smithville don't have power.

According to NYSEG, 4,997 total customers in Chenango County are currently without power. To report an outage, and for more information on local outages, visit NYSEG.com.

Additionally, a few roads have been closed through the night and are expected to remain closed until around noon today. The Chenango County Emergency Operations Center said State Highway 12 between Walmart and County Road 32B are closed, and the road is completely impassible between Fred's Inn and Mayhood's Sporting Goods. Motorists will need to use County Road 32 as an alternate route.

In the wake of the damage, the Norwich Family YMCA has opened their doors to the community. Those who need it may visit the YMCA to shower, fill water bottles, and charge electronics.
