Norwich Crowns Two Champions In Small School B Qualifier

WRESTLING

WINDSOR - Norwich crowned two champions, and had five wrestlers qualify for next weekend's Section IV tournament at Saturday's small school B qualifier.

Brady Smith (145) and Ashton Jenkins (160) went into the tournament as top seeds, and each wrestling up to that billing claiming individual crowns.

Meanwhile, Maverick Beckwith (102), Evan Meek (118), and Rob McIntytre (285) punched their tickets to next week's tournament wrestling back for third place.

Top-five finishers in this weekend's tournament earned spots, while sixth-place wrestlers gained alternate spots.  Finishing sixth for Norwich were Regan Roach (126), Braden Reid (189), and Garrett Powers (215).

Smith had a dominant run of pins en route to his championship.  Smith captured his title with a fall over Maine-Endwell's  Tyler Boura in 2:59.

Jenkins, meanwhile, won his first two matches by pinfall, but had a tougher matchup in the finals grabbing a 5-3 decision victory over Windsor's Mason McCombs.

In the small school A qualifier, B-G/Afton/Harpursville's Darren Florance (102) remained unbeaten n the season picking up an 11-0 major decision over Tioga's Logan Bellis in the finals.

The Bears received a second individual title winner, when, Brady Buttice (160) knocked off top-seeded Emmett Wood of Tioga by decision, 8-5.

Greene-Oxford crowned one champion as Hunter Page (172) picked up a 3-1 decision over Tioga's Trent Browne in the championship matchup.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Greene  60, Bainbridge-Guilford 36

BAINBRIDGE - Greene completed a busy 10-day stretch with its fifth straight victory winning at Bainbridge-Guilford on Saturday.

The Trojans again used strong defense to establish an early lead taking a 31-16 lead into halftime.

Payton Yahner scored nine in the first half, and Olivia Kennedy netted all eight of her points.

Yahner and younger sister Abby Yahner led Greene (13-3) with 17 points apiece, and Cassie Butler added nine.

Celeste Baldwin canned five 3s for B-G (6-9) finished with 17 points.
