Girls suffer setback at Corning; Boys drop game to Warriors

GIRLS'BASKETBALL

CORNING- Norwich faced an uphill battle on Friday, January 14 as the Purple Tornado faced off against the Corning Hawks the 22nd ranked team in class AA girls' basketball. The Hawks ultimately rode a 40-25 lead at the halftime intermission to hold on for a 61-53 victory.

“They (Corning) are probably the best team in our league” said Norwich Head Coach Josh Bennett on his team’s effort in the contest, “We played great-just couldn’t dig all the way out of the hole.”

Corning’s Jenna DiNardo sunk five three-point baskets for the Hawks, scoring 15 points in the game. Lexi Lapierre added in 14 points and Kellie Zoerb pitched in 13 points for Corning in the victory.

Norwich’s Maddy Morris scored a game-high 16 points, with 12 points coming from beyond the arc. Also scoring in double figures for the Purple were fellow seniors Margaret Dougher and MacKenzie Hess who scored 13 and 11 points respectively.

The Tornado ladies (7-5) will hit the hardwood on Tuesday January 18th when they travel to Utica to play Utica Proctor with tip-off slated for 7:00pm.

Boys Basketball:

Chenango Valley 81, Norwich 65

NORWICH- Chenango Valley was able to avenge an early season loss as Warrior senior Riley Spencer was a one-man wrecking crew on Saturday, January 15. Spencer was the primary offensive focal point as he scored 43 points in the contest, as Chenango Valley ran way with the ballgame in the second half with an 81-65 victory.

Spencer scored 23 of his 43 points in the contest over the final 16 minutes of play, which also coincided with CV’s largest scoring quarters in the 3rd and 4th periods as the Warriors combined for 44 second half points.

Joining Spencer in double-digit scoring for the Warriors was Chase Hanyon who scored 16 points and Nathan Edwards pitched in 10 points in the victory.

The Purple Tornado got the ballgame to within two-points by the end first quarter, but could never quite close the gap. Norwich senior Keegan Franklin scored a team-high 25 points, with Torin Lawrence and Steven Dowdall scoring 13 and 12 points respectively in the setback.

Norwich (5-7) is back in action on Tuesday January 18th when they host the Unatego Spartans at Jack Jones gymnasium with tip-off slated for 7:30pm.
