Keep Calm and Kerri On: “In the Cards”

Dear Friends,

I had a tarot card reading done this past weekend. Right now, you are one of two types of people. You are either rolling your eyes in disbelief and ready to flip to the next story, or you are intrigued and want to know more.

The art of tarot card reading dates back to Italy in the 1430’s. Originally this renaissance tradition was merely a game, that evolved over the years. The first tarot cards were painted by hand, since the printing press was not yet in existence, so only wealthy families could afford them. Over the years this evolved with additional cards and designs, when in the early 1700’s a Frenchman by the name of Jean-Baptise Alliette published the first guide to reading the tarot cards. Through this guide, cards were assigned meanings, he looked at the spreads and analyzed what they would mean and incorporated the four basic elements: earth, air, fire and water, as well as the seasons.

Tarot cards have continued to evolve over time and throughout history the ability to “read” tarot cards has been closely associated with witchcraft, magic and fortune telling. Many believe that the reading of the tarot cards is more about self-reflection and interpretation than the actual reading of someone’s future or past self.

I have always been fascinated with this practice. While I believe myself to be someone who has her feet firmly planted on the ground, I also have a mystical side that tends to lean towards believing in the unknown, the fanciful and the idea of magic and prediction. Hence my fascination with shows and movies about magic, vampires, ghosts, and such. Who’s to say these things don’t actually happen? While I can’t say I have definitive proof it does, I can also say that there’s no proof that it doesn’t and that opens us up to the “What ifs?” in life.

So, when I had the opportunity to get a tarot card reading this past weekend, I jumped at the chance, and I was not disappointed. It is fascinating what comes out of these readings!

Whether you are a believer or not, you can’t deny the very specific information that comes out during a tarot card reading … that is, if you are using someone who truly has the gift of interpretation. I’m not talking about general statements like “you will overcome the thing that has been bothering you” or “someone close to you will have a medical situation”. Those are basic statements that can relate to everyone. That’s not a real tarot card reading.

No, my reading was specific and on point. Specifics about travel plans, things going on at work, conversations and plans with family and loved ones. Things that only those closest to me would know. I am not going to get into specifics with all of you, but just believe me when I tell you that some of the things that came up were not things that just anyone would know. If I wasn’t already a believer I would have been after this session.

What I wanted to share with you today was not the fact that I 100% believe in the art and ability for someone to read tarot cards, but something else that happened.

For those of you unfamiliar with the process, the person reading the cards has you shuffle the cards and play with them until you feel you are ready. Then you cut the deck and place them back together in whatever order you want. You hand the cards back and the person who does the reading and they will begin laying them out and explain the groupings of cards and how they relate. Seasonal cards will also appear, which helps identify around when something may come to fruition or when the decision will be made.

At the end of the reading, you see a year’s worth of your life spread before you. In my reading, she noted a card sitting at the top: the Wheel of Fortune.

For those who dabble in this world, you know the significance of an upright Wheel of Fortune Card. The Wheel of Fortune card is one of the best cards you can draw and the placement of the card is really significant. This card signifies that the universe is working in your favor. That all the things you have been working for and trying to accomplish will come together in a positive way and the year will be bountiful and successful. It was a wonderful affirmation for all of the work I have been doing, all of the issues I have been tackling and the outlook for all that will come in the new year.

I am sure you have a time that you felt you were at a crossroads in your life and the path forward was not clear. Especially when one path is covered in roots, trees and debris and the other looks nice and new with a rainbow at the end. You know that the clearer path is just a trap, right? Nothing comes that easy. Nothing worth fighting for anyway.

The Wheel of Fortune card was the sign I was looking for, that the universe was in my corner, and all would work out as it should. I am going to say something totally cliché right now, but I do believe that everything happens for a reason and that the future is mine to make or change.

No matter what the future brings, I am pretty confident the universe has my back. The Wheel of Fortune says so.

Be well,

~ Kerri
