Soccer Roundup: S-E Finishes Second In West Canada Valley Tournament

NEWPORT - Canastota created a breakaway play that led to a penalty kick, and converted the second-half try to edge Sherburne-Earlville, 1-0, in the West Canada Valley tourney championship game Saturday.

Kyle Musachio earned penalty kick in a one-on-one situation with S-E coach Zach Trass. Trass stopped the initial shot attempt by Musachio, but Trass interfered with Musachio on the follow-up attempt leading to the penalty kick.

Trass finished with five saves for S-E (1-2).

OXFORD 4, GREENE 2

OXFORD - Oxford won for the fourth time in five outings this season scoring two goals over the final five-plus minutes of regulation in a victory over Greene on Saturday.

Caylin Tefft broke a 2-2 tie scoring on a direct kick with 5:17 remaining in the game. Four minutes later, Hailey Fleury iced the win scoring off a Taegan Manwarren pass.

“The second half is where we really stepped up,” said Oxford coach Sierra Badger. “Our girls stayed strong, and were able to bring home the ‘W’ tonight.”

Greene’s Sarah Markham and Cassie Butler scored goals. Markham’s goal in the 16th minute of the first half tied the game at 1-1.

Tefft and Fleury had two goals apiece for the Blackhawks.

GREENE 5, B-G 4

GREENE - Cassie Butler’s second goal of the game with under 10 minutes to play in the second half provided the margin of victory in a shootout victory over Bainbridge-Guilford on Friday.

Butler also scored the final goal of the first half in the 26th minute giving her club a 3-2 lead entering halftime.

Cali Knapp had two goals and one assist in the Trojans’ victory.

Breanna Casey led the B-G attack finishing with two goals and one assist. Casey’s second goal in the 27th minute of the second half tied the game at 4-4.

OTSELIC VALLEY 3, DERUYTER 1

SOUTH OTSELIC - Otselic Valley made the most of its shots on goal scoring three times on five total shots in a victory over visiting DeRuyter on Friday.

Emily Smith had two goals for OV, but it was an unassisted goal from Kali Waltz that gave the host club a 1-0 halftime lead.

After DeRuyter’s Brianna Hannafan tied the game in the second half off a direct kick, Smith scored the go-ahead and insurance goals to secure the win.

DeRuyter had control for periods of time in the game, but Vikings goalie, Cassidy Waltz, came up with several big stops to preserve the lead.
