Chenango County Library News : The Oxford Memorial Library

OXFORD – The Oxford Memorial Library at 8 Fort Hill Park in Oxford is housed in a beautiful old mansion that was built by Theodore Burr around 1811. Burr was famous for his design and patent of the Burr Truss. Theodore Burr designed and built covered bridges up and down the east coast and the Burr Truss was an arch that made the bridges stronger.

We would like to encourage folks to stop by the library and see this beautiful building that is on the National Historic Register. We also house the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center in an upstairs room. Trish Kane is the curator of this center and would love to have you stop in. This is an amazing resource for anyone interested in learning more about covered bridges or where they are located. There are a number of bridges in New York State.

There has been a lot happening at the library this summer as Summer Reading Program is in full swing. We had the Bubble Man for our kick-off program on Saturday, July 3. On Tuesdays during July at 3:30 there will be In-Person Story Times. Thursdays at 6:00pm there will be Evening Story time followed by a craft/activity time.

Saturday, July 17 from 10:00-2:00 there will be Game Day with all sorts of board and card games. Our Grand Finale will be on Saturday, July 31 at 1:00 with Mike The Juggler. This program will be held in the park right in front of the library.

The Tuesday afternoon programs will be held in the story garden weather permitting, otherwise they will be held in our community room. Thursday programs will be in the community room. Be aware that we are still following the Covid rules and regulations that the school has been following so please wear a mask inside the library and follow social distancing guidelines during our programs and events.

The Oxford Memorial Library is fully automated and part of the Four County Library System. If you have a fine free library card for another library in the Four County Library System that card is valid at the Oxford library. The library has a board of seven trustees.
