NEW BERLIN - When 14-year-old Cooper Hine sustained serious head injuries in an ATV accident last month, friends and family banded together to help the teen and her family in any way possible.

Those efforts have culminated in an outpouring of support in the New Berlin community and an organized event that will take place at the Unadilla Valley Central School this weekend.

The Cooper Strong 5K will begin at 9 a.m. followed by a fun run/walk at 9:45 Saturday on the grounds of UV Central, where Cooper just graduated middle school. A chicken barbecue and Chinese auction fundraiser to help the Hine family is planned at the South New Berlin Fire Department after the race.

There’s also been ongoing efforts by individuals in the community to show support, many of whom have tied light blue ribbons (Cooper’s favorite color) in front of their homes and businesses. Auto decals reading #HineStrong sold at the village and town offices, NBT Bank, and New York Pizzeria decorate the windows of scores of cars throughout the town.
