BASEBALL

Norwich batsmen bounce back quickly

SIDNEY - Coming off an extra innings loss earlier in the week, Norwich led from its opening at-bat, and cruised to a 9-1 win at Sidney on Wednesday afternoon.

Starting pitcher Keegan Franklin tossed a complete game victory for Norwich.

Franklin fanned five, allowed six hits, and just a single run to the Warriors in the third inning.

 “The players had great energy in the field and at the plate," said Norwich coach Donny Lawrence. "Coming off a tough loss in extra innings, these guys showed they were determined to show up and play today”

Torin Lawrence went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored to lead NHS.

Josh Willis and Evan Sylstra also contributed 2-for-4 days at the plate. Sylstra also drove in a pair of runs.

Unadilla Valley/G-MU 5, Walton 2

NEW BERLIN - Unadilla Valley-G-MU snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to home victory over Walton on Thursday.

Cameron Osborne went 3-for-3 with two triples and two runs scored. Tim Postma added two hits and two RBI, while also pitching three strong innings of relief to earn the victory.

Deposit/Hancock nips Greene

GREENE - Facing perennial state title contender Deposit-Hancock, Greene suffered its first loss of the season, 7-4, on Thursday.

The Eagles pulled away with two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.

Laycee Drake went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to lead D-H.

Olivia Kennedy took the loss for Greene, but finished with 11 strikeouts, and allowed just five hits.

TRACK AND FIELD

Afton/Harpursville tops Greene boys and girls

GREENE - Afton/Harpursville took advantage of Greene's depleted lineup winning the boys' and girls' track meets on Wednesday.

A/H's boys earned an 83-22 victory, while the girls beat the Trojans 76-10.

Abram Parsons (3,200 meters) and Wyatt Ingraham (shot put) grabbed Greene's two victories on the boys' side.

Meanwhile, Lyla Beifeldt had two wins for the Trojans' girls winning the 100- and 400-meter hurdles.

“We were very proud of our kids," said Greene coach Dave Gorton.  "They competed hard and we had several people get personal marks. We are a bit short-handed right now, but we think we will have more athletes ready to go next week.”

OXFORD - In a Route 12 matchup, Greene owned the singles matches, while Oxford ruled the doubles.

The difference was the Trojans' three singles team points, which led them to a one-point victory over the Blackhawks.

Maeric Barrows, Paige Estabrook, and Shane Rideout all won matches in straight sets for Greene.

Meanwhile, Oxford's doubles teams of Madalyn Barrows-Natalie Barrows, and Jill Finch-Jocie Finch also won in straight sets.

Thursday, the Trojans improved their mark to 4-0 on the season taking all five team points from Deposit-Hancock.

Not only did the Trojans win all five matches in straight sets, it was nearly a perfect performance as D-H picked up only two total games in the match.

Sus Valley rolls past Norwich tennis

NORWICH - At Norwich on Tuesday, Susquehanna Valley picked up two forfeits from Norwich, and won four of the five matches contested to earn the 6-1 victory.

Nick Deady salvaged Norwich from a shutout loss with a victory at second singles. Deady bested Samar Dhillon, 9-6. Norwich third singles player, Grayson Boyer, nearly pulled off a victory as well dropping a 9-7 final to SV's Daniel Davies.

Greene 286, Deposit-Hancock 304

GREENE -  At Genegantslet Golf Course Tuesday, Greene won for the third time in four matches this season beating visiting Deposit-Hancock.

Playing the front nine, Cooper Klumpp and Luke DeJager topped the Trojans' scorers. Klumpp shot a 51, and DeJager was one shot back at 52.

Deposit-Hancock's Nick Hazen topped his club firing a 52, and teammate Brennen Karcher shot a 53.

Greene hosts Delhi on Friday.

 

Chenango Forks 247, Norwich 270

NORTH NORWICH - At Canasawacta Country Club on Tuesday, Chenango Forks improved to 4-0 on the season beating the Purple Tornado linksters.

Max Marson shot a team-low 46 over the par-36 front nine, and Cooper Burton chipped in with a 54 for NHS. Norwich's record fell to 1-3 overall.

The Blue Devils' Trevor Warpus earned overall medalist honors shooting a 39.
