Soccer: Greene holds on to edge Oxford

GREENE – Greene built a three-goal lead midway through the second half, but had to withstand a big Oxford rally hanging on for a 3-2 victory, Monday afternoon at George G. Raymond Field.

Sarah Markham scored two first-half goals for Greene (3-4), and Cassie Butler’s goal for Greene in the 20th minute of the second half had the host club in command.

Hailey Fleury put Oxford (3-4) on the board seven minutes after Butler’s goal getting an assist from Kaylin Tefft.

With 8:45 to play, Taylor Smith drew Oxford to within one following a pass from Lizzie Knapp.

“We came alive a little too late tonight, but toward the end of the second half, we really came alive,” said Oxford coach Sierra Badger. “We happened to score two goals late in the second half, and unfortunately, there not enough time left.”

Greene wraps up its season Tuesday at Sidney, while Oxford closes its Fall 2 sports campaign Wednesday at Delhi.
