NORWICH –Beginning this week the Norwich Family YMCA will be opening its doors to members for use of the swimming pool, the walking track, pickleball courts, and the racquetball courts.

This is just the first phase of the reopening plan, the YMCA hopes to move quickly onto phase 2 by Tuesday, September 8. The second phase will open up more of the gym fitness equipment and will include the weight room, fitness center, cardiovascular equipment and group exercise classes.

In order to use the pool and racquetball courts, the YMCA has implemented a new reservation system. Individuals can reserve a pool lane or racquetball court for 60 minute intervals. Due to the uncertainty of members returning and financial liabilities, the hours of operation will start off from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday for phase one.

Norwich Family YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen said the national average for members returning is only 30 percent.

The facility has several new requirements in order to operate under state guidelines. Approved masks must be worn at all time except for when swimming.

"We can't allow neck gators or bandanas. They have to be standard face masks," said Mullen.
