NORWICH – Warren E. Eaton American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 189, is proud to announce two great award recipients from the ALA Department of NY. Melanie Haines is the proud recipient of the Unit Member of the Year award and Norwich High School senior Taylor M. Ford awarded department college scholarship.

The Unit Member of the Year Award showcases the dedication and time spent volunteering that auxiliary go-getters devote to the organization’s mission of serving veterans, the military and their families. Under the ALA's Past Presidents' Parley program, Melanie was nominated by her Unit 189 President, Sophie Liberatore. This award recognizes the significant contributions made by an outstanding unit member. She is honored within the department and the unit.

Over many volunteer hours, Melanie helped youth in the Chenango Hellcats American Legion (CHAL) baseball team; interviewed students for Empire Girls' State and for college scholarships; planned, decorated, and marched in the Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day parades, and the Post 189 float in the "City of Norwich Parade of Lights"; helped with Flag Disposal ceremonies; helped with many fundraisers; planted flowers at the Oxford Veteran’s Home; made poppies; and so much more.

The ALA Department of NY selected Haines as she exemplifies the values and ideals of the ALA and her accomplishments significantly have impacted the program work in her unit.

ALA Unit 189 is also proud of Norwich High School Senior Taylor M. Ford. She was awarded a $1,000 department scholarship. Another great honor, since there are only ten $1000 scholarships awarded each year for the whole state.

Due to the pandemic, award ceremonies will not be held, however, ALA Unit 189, the Chenango County ALA, and the Depatment of NY are very proud of Melanie and Taylor. To learn more about the Auxiliary’s mission or to volunteer, donate or join, visit www.ALAforVeterans.org.
