NORWICH – Earning their fifth straight win, the Norwich Lady Purple Tornado basketball topped Section III Class AA Liverpool 67-57 Saturday afternoon.

The Tornado earned a quick start to the game, leading 16-4 after the first quarter as all five starters – Sydney Coggins, Emily Evans, Abby Flynn, Margaret Dougher and MacKenzie Hess – balanced the scoring for the home team in the opening eight minutes of play.

The 12-point first quarter advantage was held for the remainder of the game, despite the strong effort from the visiting team. Liverpool outscored Norwich 39-32 in the second half of play after finding their offensive rhythm in the second quarter with 15 points.

Norwich had balanced scoring in the win as three players finished in double figures in the scoring column and had four others contributed valuable points.

Flynn led the Tornado, despite spending some time on the bench due to foul trouble, with 14 points. Hess scored 13, doing her damage at the free throw line as the Norwich guard went 9-for-12 for the game.

The Tornado shot 24-for-36 at the charity stripe (67-percent) compared to Liverpool’s 24 attempts. The visiting team made just 11 free throws, shooting 46-percent for the game.
