CHENANGO COUNTY – The Republican primaries were held yesterday at polling sites throughout Chenango County, with Shawn Sastri becoming the Republican candidate for the City of Norwich mayoral election and the results of the Town of North Norwich supervisor primary soon to be decided by absentee voters.

According to Chenango County Republican Party Commissioner Mary Lou Monahan, the results are considered unofficial until they have been certified, and absentee ballets have been collected.

Monahan said while it is unlikely that results, besides the tie for Town of North Norwich supervisor primary, would impact the outcome of those primaries, but it remains possible that they will until the results have been certified.

"We have to have the primary results certified within 25 days, but I'm sure we'll have it done before then," said Monahan. "By law, we have to allow to July 2 for absentee votes that have been postmarked June 24."

For the City of Norwich Mayor position, Shawn C. Sastri took the primary over Christine A. Carnrike with a vote of 163 to 93.

"The City of Norwich members of the Chenango Republican County Committee congratulate Shawn Sastri on his victory in the mayoral primary election," said Chenango County Republican Committee Secretary Matthew Caldwell. "The Republican voters of the City of Norwich have made their voices heard and Shawn will appear on the Republican line for Mayor on November 5th."
