SIDNEY – The Crimson Knights of Afton held a 4-1 lead over Gilboa-Conesville heading into the final inning of play Wednesday afternoon. Needing just three outs to move into the Section IV Class D semifinal against top-seeded Lady Jacks of Deposit, Afton picked up the first out with a fly ball caught by Hannah Tracy.

Then Gilboa-Conesville drew three straight walks to load the bases. The next batter for the Wildcats was hit by a pitch, sending one runner in to score on the play and cutting the lead down to two runs. Another walk brought in another Gilboa-Conesville runner in, making the score 4-3 late in the game.

Cassidy Miller of the Wildcats then sent a hard ground ball up the middle and rolled into centerfield. Her single scored two on the hit, allowing Gilboa-Conesville to snag the 5-4 lead. The fifth-seeded visiting team then added another five runs in the frame to secure the 10-4 win over Afton for the comeback upset.

Afton got their offense started in the first inning to take the early lead when Caleigh Stevens grounded out, sending Hannah Tracy in for the score from third.

The Crimson Knights then added another two in the bottom of the third as Stevens once again got things going with a lead-off single. Stevens moved up the bases on an error, landing on third before having Mallory Carmen come in as a courtesy runner.
