NEWFIELD – The host and third-seeded Newfield Wolverines used a 26-1 run in the second quarter to take down No. 14 Unadilla Valley 61-34 in Tuesday’s first round of the Section IV Class C tournament.

“The game was extremely physical,” said Brandi Whitbeck, the Lady Storm’s head coach. “We played hard but we just couldn’t get in a flow. They had a huge second quarter that put the game out of reach.”

UV was within four points after the first quarter, scoring nine. Seven of those nine were scored by Meegan White.

However, the Storm were held by Newfield to a single trip to the free throw line. Unadilla Valley’s Shelby Meade made one of two attempts to register the only point scored by the visiting team in the second

Newfield went on to score their 26 points in the stanza behind balanced scoring by six different players and were led Katie Moravec’s eight points. With their big quarter, the Lady Wolverines extended their lead to 29 points at the halftime break.

Both teams came out of the intermission to score 13 points, keeping the Newfield advantage at 29 points. In the third, Sophie Off drained the lone 3-point bucket by the Storm as she scored five to pace UV in the quarter.
