Blackhawks grab second win of season on senior night

OXFORD – The Blackhawks were able to score three touchdowns in the first half on their way to a 40-6 win over Newfield, Oxford’s second victory of the season on senior night and their annual homecoming game.

Xavier Cruz, the Blackhawks’ speedster, took the opening kick-off to the endzone for a 72 yard return giving the home an early lead. Cruz finished the game with two touchdowns while taking 17 carries for 143 yards on the ground to lead Oxford offense.

Before his second touchdown in the second stanza, his teammate and quarterback Isaiah Peterson crossed the goal line from four yards out, putting the Blackhawks up 12-0. With Cruz’s addition in the quarter, Oxford took an 18 point lead into the intermission.

Peterson displayed his passing ability when he found his receiver CJ Smith down field. Smith capped off the catch with a touchdown for a 62 yard play through the air, extending the Blackhawks’ lead to 24-0. Cruz converted the two-point attempt to put Oxford up 26-0.

Newfield answered with a score of their own as their quarterback Travis Chrisman completed a pass to Jacob Humble from 12 yards away. Following the first touchdown for Newfield, the score was 26-6.

The next time either team scored again was in the final 12 minutes of play and once again it was Cruz who took the handoff in for Blackhawk points. Cruz ran the ball in from five yards out.
