BINGHAMTON – Abiatal Avelino launched two home runs, helping the Trenton Thunder past the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, 10-3, Tuesday at NYSEG Stadium. Trenton’s first 2018 victory at NYSEG Stadium is their fifth against Binghamton in eight tries. Marcos Molina started for the Rumble Ponies against Thunder right-hander Domingo Acevedo for the second time in six days.

After allowing 11 hits and 13 runs in three-plus innings his last time out, Molina’s rebound attempt was quickly thwarted by the Trenton offense. Just three batters into his start, he coughed up a two-run blast to Avelino, giving the Thunder an early 2-0 advantage. After issuing a two-out walk to Gosuke Katoh, the inning was extended for Jeff Hendrix, whose triple pushed Katoh in for a 3-0 lead. Mandy Alvarez capped the four-run first by doubling in Hendrix to make it 4-0.

After Acevedo faced the minimum in the first, Molina’s rough outing continued in the second. Avelino sent an 0-2 offer deep over the left field fence, picking up his second home run in as many innings. The second longball gave Trenton a 6-0 cushion and earned Avelino his 12th hit in 25 at-bats versus Binghamton this season.

Molina (1-9) did not allow another run after the second inning. He coughed up seven hits and six runs across his five innings. The 23-year-old whiffed six and issued three free passes.

Acevedo (2-1) also lasted five innings, allowing just one run on six hits. His lone blemish came in the third inning, when John Mora’s softly hit single to left scored Joey Wong.

The Ponies plated two more runs before the night’s end, collecting both in the seventh inning against reliever David Sosebee. With two aboard and one out, Joey Wong’s slow roller to shortstop would bring in both Patrick Mazeika from second and Joey Terdoslavich from first. Avelino collected the grounder and stepped on the second base, but Terdoslavich had already beaten it out. Avelino’s try to first base went awry and out of play, pushing two home to make it 9-3.
