McDonough native publishes 13th book: How to Scare a Monster!

McDONOUGH – McDonough native Dustin Warburton has announced the publishing of his 13th book, titled How to Scare a Monster!: a children's book co-authored with renowned horror film director, Tom Holland.

"Tom and I worked together for about a year and a half on this project," said Warburton. "He had called me and told me he was a fan of my work, and I was a really big fan of his first film "Fright Night." It was intimidating at first but I rose to the occasion, I had to up my game for this one."

Holland's best known works include the films "Psycho II," "Fright Night," "Child's Play," and "Thinner."

Warburton began his career as a young adult/adult horror writer, but lately has found a niche co-writing books with celebrities. Dennis Rodman, "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler, and Hector “Machito” Camacho Jr. are just a few of the celebrities Warburton has published books with.

Warburton said Holland contacted him after reading Warburton's fifth book, titled How to Scare Kids: a children's book that doubles as a guidebook for monsters aspiring to improve their scaring.

"Tom really like that idea and he wanted to run with something new," said Warburton. "He had never done a kids project."

Warburton said he and Holland's new book How to Scare a Monster! is about a boy who is afraid of everything learning to face his fears. There are several nods to the many works of Holland's throughout, depicted by the book's illustrator, Lenny K.

"Lenny K is an up and coming artist, one of the most amazing artists I've worked with," said Warburton. "His style is like Tim Burton meets Where the Wild Things Are."

Warburton said he hopes his new book will become a staple around the Halloween holiday the same way that Rudolph has become tradition associated with Christmas.

Today, Warburton resides in southern Vermont, but he still returns to his old stomping grounds of McDonough from time to time. In November, he said he plans to return to Chenango County to showcase his new book at local libraries.
