NYSPHSAA Executive Committee Voted On Upcoming Sporting Items

Troy, N.Y. – The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) held its quarterly Executive Committee meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy. There were several important items discussed and voted on.

The Committee approved establishing a two-division dual meet state championship for the sport of wrestling. This is effective for the winter of 2018. The state tournament in the sport of girls golf will be expanded to include sectional high school champions to compete as a high school team. Starting in the 2017-18 school year, boys and girls bowling will be divided into two divisions based on school enrollments. Division II will be for schools with 599 students and below, Division I will be 600 and above. The boys and girls state bowling championship in 2018 will be held at the OnCenter in Syracuse at the site of the USBC Open Championship. Three cheerleading items were approved. Schools can request a minimum of four panel judges and one safety judge. Also, props cannot be used as bases in cheerleading competitions. The use of the 2016-17 cheerleading rubric was approved.

The committee approved with a 22-0 vote, to freeze membership dues for the 2017-18 school year. Beginning with the winter 2016 season modified boys and girls basketball will be allowed to use the three-point shot, with section and league approval.
