Binghamton man found in possession of crystal meth after accident on I-81

MARATHON – A Binghamton man was arrested for a felony and a slew of misdemeanor charges following a tractor-trailer accident that occurred just after 6 a.m. on Interstate 81, in the Town of Marathon, in Cortland County, on Monday. Aug. 8.

Jeremy D. Austin, 36, was charged with vehicular assault in the second degree, a class E felony; operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, a class A misdemeanor; reckless endangerment in the second degree, a class A misdemeanor; and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor; after an investigation conducted by the New York State Police at Sidney determined that he was impaired by drugs as he drove a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer on I-81 northbound and then drifted off the roadway and drove through a large median. Austin continued into the southbound lane of I-81, where he crashed into another tractor-trailer that was being driven southbound in that lane. Both vehicles came to rest in the roadway, blocking traffic.
