Guzy sentenced to 40 years to life in prison on top two counts

NORWICH – John M. Guzy, of Bainbridge, was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison on the top two charges on which he was convicted; Murder in the second degree, a class A-1 felony; and attempted murder in the second degree, a class B felony; for the road rage killing of Derek D. Prindle and attempted murder of Derek S. Prindle, the victims father, in Chenango County Court on Monday, June 27.

During sentencing, several members of the Prindle family, including Derek S. Prindle, made powerful statements. Prindle's mother said, “this is the worst pain a mother could have to endure. He's loved enormously, and many feel the pain of his loss.”

Along with the sentencing, Guzy was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $9,055 for the funeral costs of Derek D. Prindle. $6,000 will have to be paid back to the New York State Crime Victims compensation fund, while the remaining $3,055 will be paid back to the Prindle family.

Guzy has already filed a notice of appeal.
