OWEGO - Playing yesterday, Thursday, October 15, in the opening rounds of the sectional tournament Norwich has one team moving on to the finals. The doubles team of Makenzie Maynard and Caroline Stewart will be moving on to the finals today in Maine-Endwell.
After dominating their opening three rounds by winning every match in straight sets the team of Maynard and Stewart will be playing in the section finals against Seton Catholic's top doubles team. This is the same team that stopped the pair's sectionals run last season and the Purple Tornado are out looking for revenge. On their way to the finals Stewart and Maynard defeated teams from Owego, Vestal, and Seton Catholic, all in straight sets.
Norwich took six players to the tournament, two singles players and two doubles teams. In singles action Norwich's Sammi Gage, the fourth overall seed, won her first match, defeating Ava Mccann from Seton Catholic 6-0 and 7-5. In the second round Gage would fall to Natalie Braman of Owego in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, and 7-5.
Norwich's second singles player Maryssa Campbell would fall in the first round to Sam Tassey of Johnson City, cutting her senior sectionals run short.
The second doubles team of Brooke Steigerwald and Megan Burke would win their opening round match against Owego, 6-2 and 6-1. In the second round though they would fall to the Maine-Endwell team of Hannah George and Audrey Burke, 6-3 and 6-1.
With only one team left playing, Norwich is out of the overall running for first place, but may be able to take third overall in the section. "It was great to have three of four of our girls win their first matches," said Norwich coach John Stewart. "We played some really tough tennis today and lost some tough ones, but I'm proud of how the girls played."
