American Legion seeks ‘Gold Star Mothers’ to honor

NORWICH – The American Legion Auxiliary, along with the American Legion Post 189 in Norwich, is searching for “Gold Star Mothers” to be honored in the Memorial Day services.

All mothers and step-mothers who are interested will be included, and they don’t have to be a member of the American Gold Star Mothers Organization. It has been a long time since so many mothers who have given the ultimate sacrifice have been honored.

What does Gold Star signify? That the blue star has turned gold by the death of a son or daughter while in the service in either the world wars, the Korean or Vietnam wars, or in conflict in either Grenada, Lebanon, Panama, the Gulf War, or the War on Terrorism.

“Death while in service” means there is no delineation between “killed in combat” and “dying.” So long as death is not caused by the individual’s own willful misconduct.

Please contact Mary Lou McAvoy at 607-647-9554 or 607-237-4138, or the American Legion Post 189 at 607-334-9414. Or email for information by May 18.
