NORWICH – The intersection of State highway 23 and County road 32 was temporarily shut down by authorities as crews from the Norwich City Fire Department and NYSEG worked quickly to secure the scene of a gas leak at one of NYSEG’s pressurized natural gas pumping stations located on East River Road Tuesday evening.

According to county officials, a motorist notified county emergency services of a loud noise and clouds of white fog emitting from a small pump building located on NYSEG property just south of the Benedict Corporation car dealership.

County Chief Dispatcher A. Jones reported the Norwich fire crews could hear the rushing sound of the pressurized gas leak as they exited the fire house en route to the scene.
