Drunk Driver Allegedly Crashes Stolen Truck In Sherburne

SHERBURNE – Local authorities said they witnessed a drunk driver crash a stolen truck head on into another moving vehicle Tuesday.

On Jan. 13 at approximately 7 p.m., the Chenango County Sheriff's Office 911 Center received a call from a Norwich resident reporting that his pick-up truck had been stolen by a family member 20 minutes earlier.

At approximately the same time that day, a Chenango County Sheriff's Office deputy and Village of Sherburne Police Department officer assisted in the removal of a tractor trailer out of a ditch off State Route 12 near Shawler Brook Road in the Town of Sherburne. The New York State Department of Transportation was directing traffic during the removal of the tractor trailer.

While authorities were assisting in the removal of the tractor trailer, a pick-up truck came on the scene, drove around the northbound traffic barrier and crashed head on into a vehicle heading southbound.

Jeremy M. Sawyer, 38 of Norwich was operating the pick-up truck that struck the southbound vehicle. The southbound vehicle was operated by Jeffrey VanCourt, 43 of Sherburne.
