Rock ‘n’ roll into Relay for Life this weekend

NORWICH – This weekend marks the 18th year for Relay for Life of Chenango County. Events will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 18 and conclude after the closing ceremonies on the morning of Saturday, July 19 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich.

The event, with a rock ‘n’ roll theme, promises to keep with the tradition of fun and entertainment for team members and community members with the purpose of providing support and raising funds for those affected by cancer.

Relay team members will participate in activities, hold fundraisers, and circle the track with their teammates. All of the community is welcome to join in the fun and support in raising funds for research for the American Cancer Society.

When asked why she continues to lead the Relay efforts in Chenango County Marie DeSarro, Event Chair, explained that cancer continues at epidemic proportions.

“The numbers are still so high. We want to keep fundraising so we can see the numbers go down,” she said. “One of the tag lines that Relay uses is that ‘Cancer Never Sleeps,’ which is the reason we walk throughout the night; to symbolize that we always need to be fighting this dreaded disease.”

DeSarro said that one of the most important events at Relay is the Survivor Dinner, scheduled at 5 p.m. on Friday in the Exhibition Hall. There will be a full dinner catered by NY Pizzeria of New Berlin and desserts by Amy Law.
