Hitting The Green For A Good Cause

EDMESTON – Golfers took to the links this past Saturday to show their ongoing support for Saint Theresa's church.

For the past 17 years, Saint Theresa's has hosted its annual golf tournament. Like several past tournaments, the course was filled to capacity as 27 teams took part. The annual event draws people from all over the region and has raised more than $70,000 over the years to aid the efforts of Saint Theresa's.

The church, located in the Village of New Berlin, helps individuals and families with various needs throughout the year. Last year alone, the church helped approximately 125 people of all ages get food, clothing, toys, and even fill their fuel tanks.

Tournament Director, Terry Potter said he was “extremely pleased to see the event full to capacity yet again and the money raised goes directly to help the community as well as off-set church expenses. This is a great way to raise funds and the event itself is always a good time.”

Potter added he is happy to see many teams return year after year. “Some of the teams travel a great distance to be part of it,” he said, noting that for the past five years, the tournament has been hosted at Red Pines Golf Course in Edmeston. “I would like to thank 'Spike' for accommodating the church and having the course in great shape.”

“This tournament has become a tradition for the last six years for my friends and I. We look forward to this every year and are already looking to mark it on our calendar next June. One friend in our foursome flew in from North Carolina, one drove up from New York City, and another drove over from Cobleskill. It's a great tournament!” Said participant Brandon Roberts.

It seems as though this year teams were fairly matched as there were ties for both first and second place. First place winners – teams Convis and Slentz – finished with a score of -12 while second place winners – teams Crandall and Shoemaker – finished just behind them with a -11; and team Howard came in third place with a -10.

Potter said the success of the tournament each year is made possible by numerous sponsors. “We would like to thank all of our sponsors who help make it happen. Whether it is a monetary donation or goods for prizes, we truly appreciate everyone who plays a role in the fundraising efforts.”

Saint Theresa's golf tournament is held each June and coordinators say they are already underway making plans for next year's event.
