SHERBURNE – Rome Free Academy’s depth and pressure offense led it to a 95-84 S-E Tournament championship game victory over Unadilla Valley Saturday night.

All-tournament pick Lindell Reed scored 31 points for RFA, and the Tigers outscored UV 35-24 in the final period. “They substitute one good athlete after another, and they just wore us down in the fourth quarter,” said UV coach Matt Osborne.

UV shot 57 percent from the field, and made up a nine-point deficit to tie the game at the end of the third quarter. Eight turnovers in the final quarter, though, worked against the Storm’s victory hopes.

Nate Shackleton had a career-high 30 points to top UV (2-1), and David Dufresne added 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Host Sherburne-Earlville claimed the consolation game beating Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, 57-36.

S-E controlled play at the start of the game and the start of the second half outscoring V-V-S by a combined 40-9 in those two periods. During a 25-5 third quarter, Austin Jasper scored seven points, Elijah Morris scored six, while Kevin Vibbard Jr. and Ben Khoury had five apiece. “We shared the ball, and if we can do that, we’ll be fine,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard Sr.. “We saw some things from Friday’s game (an 80-68 loss to RFA) that we need to address, and we’ll take care of those in practice.”
