Marathon denies Greene spot in Section IV finals

Boys’ Soccer

Marathon 3, Greene 2

GREENE – Marathon denied Greene a second trip to the sectional finals in five seasons scoring the winning goal with 19.6 seconds left in regulation, Wednesday at Greene High School.

After numerous Marathon scoring opportunities were stuffed by the Greene defense over the final 20 minutes – and Trojans goalie Connor Moriarity – the Olympians capitalized on a misclear near the top of the 18-yard box. Tyler Hoellerer drilled a hard shot into the upper right netting as his team celebrated.

That celebration was short-lived as Greene pushed nearly its entire lineup to midfield for the ensuing kickoff, and immediately threatened the Marathon defensive zone. An apparent tying goal with one second left, though, was waved off by the official as time expired. Greene coach Rick Tallman, and the rest of the Greene squad, swallowed that proverbial pill hard. Tallman wasn’t sure what the ruling was on the final play.
