Kick for the Cure Tournament Finals

Unadilla Valley 2, Bainbridge-Guilford 1

NEW BERLIN – Turn about is fair play, especially in Unadilla Valley’s collective minds.

Just a few days after losing to B-G in overtime on a penalty kick, the Storm (7-5) prevailed over the Bobcats in the Kick for the Cure Tournament finals Saturday evening.

After a foul was called in the box, David Schwab converted the penalty kick with 6:20 left in regulation for the winning goal. It was the third meeting this season between the two clubs, and all three have gone to the wire. “The last three years, every one of our games has been a one-goal game or a tie,” said UV coach Ryan Houck. “We play each other very tight, and I’d like to say we bring the best out in each other. It was nice to get that one back from the other night.”

UV led 1-0 at halftime when Derrick Schwab scored off a header pass from older brother David. B-G knotted the game up eight minutes into the second half on Kyle Hanvey’s goal.

Unadilla Valley advanced to the finals of its tourney blanking Afton, 4-0.

Mason Alford and David Schwab had first-half goals for UV, and Nate Shackelton along with sophomore Shaun Hager added second-half goals. For Hager, it was his first-ever varsity tally.

Afton stayed in the game behind the outstanding play of keeper Matt Olin, who made 14 saves. “He played a tremendous game for them,” said UV coach Ryan Houck of Olin. “He made more than a few diving saves.”

B-G scored in the first half to defeat Sidney, 1-0. Phillip Janke scored his first varsity goal with Jake Cuozzo picking up the assist.

Otselic Valley 3, Mount Markham 2

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley swept back-to-back games this weekend edging McGraw on Friday and Mount Markham on Saturday.

OV’s Jason Olin broke a 1-1 tie with McGraw scoring in the first minute of the second half after getting a pass from Connor Smith.

The Vikes trailed early giving up a goal 10 minutes in, but tied the game in the 25th minute following a free kick as Matt Neal served Smith for the tying tally.

“We never gave up after being down,” said OV coach Jacob Preston.

Saturday, the Vikings jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first half, and turned back the Mustangs after giving up that advantage.

Neal and Austin Reynolds had first-half goals. Neal’s came as a follow-up after Olin’s initial shot was mishandled by the Mount Markham keeper.

The Mustangs tied the game with two goals in the first three minutes of the second half before Reynolds came up with the game-winning play. After making a slide tackle, Reynolds controlled the ball up the field, and crossed to Olin for the winner.

“Mount Markham seemed to regain the momentum in the second half, but we kept our compsoure and built the momentum back up,” Preston said.
