HARPURSVILLE – Defending Section IV Class C champion Greene overcame a shaky second inning to winning its opening game of the season Thursday afternoon at Harpursville.

The Hornets took advantage of three Trojans errors to put six on the board during the bottom half of the second to grab a 6-2 lead. Greene battled back for four runs in the next frame to tie the game, and dominated the rest of the way.

“Everything is kind of new for us this year, but it’s a great sign to battle back the way that we did,” said Greene coach Rick Smith.

Kylie Schaff, who was a big bat in Greene’s lineup last year as a sophomore, had an impressive debut to her 2013 season finishing 5-for-5 with four RBI. Laura Durdon had two hits and two RBI, and freshman Shawn Ayers went 2-for-3. Greene finished with 15 hits, seven of those doubles.

“We don’t have a lot of speed or kids that will hit homers, but we do have kids who can hit the gaps,” Smith said. “The way we hit the ball today was how I thought we would be like this season.”

Greene opens MAC division play this Tuesday at Deposit.
