NORWICH – Activists opposed to the practice of hydraulic fracturing will be lining up along portions of the Route 12 corridor to make their presence felt from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, in Oxford and Norwich.

The controversial practice of high-volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking, involves a combination of drilling and injections of pressurized and treated water into subterranean rock formations thousands of feet below the Earth’s surface in an effort to harvest natural gas. Currently the practice of hydrofracking has been halted at a state level and after failing to meet a Feb. 13 deadline for the publication of a long-anticipated comprehensive environmental impact review; no realistic timeline for a state ruling is known to exist.

Saturday’s rally will be the first anti-fracking protest of its kind in Chenango County involving more than one location.
