FENTON – The 50-50-type matches went Norwich’s way Tuesday night, and Frank Garcia’s pin at 145 pounds wrapped up the Tornado matmen’s second straight dual meet victory.

At 285 pounds, first-year wrestler Matt Lippa earned a 3-2 decision win over veteran Shane Moriarity, and 99-pound Dalen Geislinger used a late-match armbar to secure two back points for a 2-0 win over Jake Weir.

“It was one of those meets that when you put it down on paper beforehand, you just know it’s going to be close,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “Matt was good on his feet and wrestled a strategic match. Dalen beat a kid who is ranked among the top three or four in the section. He turned his kid and just held him until the end.”

Cole Rifanburg (106) retained the momentum of his runner-up finish at last weekend’s tournament in Ilion winning by pinfall in the first period. Norwich, too, benefited from three CV forfeits. “We now have guys in the lineup, and it makes things a lot easier,” Downey said. “It’s hard to win giving up six forfeits.”

Norwich’s Garcia and Tristan Rifanburg will be in action this weekend at Sullivan Community Community College when they compete in the prestigious Eastern States Classic.
