Local physician guest at opening of Romanian hospital’s ER

NORWICH – UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Services Medical Director Peter E. Gordon, MD, FACEP, recently returned from a long weekend in Romania. He was there at the invitation of the Romanian Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication, the national emergency medical response system, to attend the opening of the new, state-of-the-art Emergency Services Department in Tirgu Mures. He stated, “The new Emergency Department is truly spectatular, and I was thrilled to attend the ceremony that marked its opening.” Among those at the ceremony were Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta and Dr. Gordon’s good friend and colleague Dr. Raed Arafat from the Romanian Ministry of Health.

Dr. Gordon, who has been Chenango Memorial’s medical director since spring of 2012, was invited to Romania for the occasion because of his long-standing involvement in developing emergency medicine in Romania. His experience in emergency medicine has been both in the United States and internationally, and he includes International Emergency Medicine development as a professional interest. In 2006, Dr. Gordon held the title of international expert of the REMMSY IV project that was created to develop emergency medical services in Romania. He stated, “The opening of the new Emergency Services Department in Tirgu Mures is one outcome of the 2006 project, and I was truly honored to be there. I am very impressed by the progress made in the Romanian emergency medical system since 2006.”

A graduate of Harvard College and University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Gordon has had academic appointments including Instructor in Emergency Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and New York University School of Medicine. For nine years he was Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at New York Unviersity School of Medicine. His background includes practicing as attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY; New York Unviersity/Tisch Hospital, New York, NY; Bellevue Hospital Center, New York, NY; and Bassett Medical Centrer, Cooperstown, NY.

In addition to being a featured speaker, lecturer, and medical course director both in the United States and internationally, Dr. Gordon is board certified in Emergency Medicine, a member of American Board of Emergency Physicians and is a board examiner for American Board of Emergency Medicine. He is Medical Director of Emergency Services at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and sees patients in its Emergency Room.

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital, now celebrating its one hundredth anniversary, is a member of UHS, a locally owned, not-for-profit, 916-bed hospital.
