Smith Ford readies for 7th annual Mustang Rally

NORWICH – Fireworks, food and fun as usual will take place on Saturday at Smith Ford LLC’s 7th annual Mustang Rally.

The event will kick off at 6 p.m., at which point car enthusiasts from around the state will gather to celebrate the history of one of America’s most iconic cars.

“Every one has either owned a Mustang or had a parent, grandparent or other relative who has owned one,” said Smith Ford’s Will Tyrrell. “There’s a little bit of everything at the event: nostalgia with the older cars and people looking to see what can be done with newer cars.”

Tyrrell explained that the event began with a desire to do something for Smith Ford customers that didn’t involve a sale.

“We wanted to show people how much we appreciate their business and also do something fun for the community,” said Tyrrell.

Last year, the event brought more than 160 cars from as far away as Pennsylvania and New Jersey and Tyrrell hopes this year will see as many as 200.

Tuller’s Catering will provide food and Sip Vittles will bring a variety of specialty drinks such as smoothies and iced coffee to relieve attendees from the heat.

American Fireworks will also return with another fantastic display after dark, said Tyrrell.

By the time the next Mustang Rally comes around, Smith Ford will have switched into the hands of Matthews Auto Dealer, although the staff will not change.

“My parents (Bill and Janice Tyrrell) are looking to retire; they’ve earned it,” said Tyrell, who will continue to manage the Norwich dealership. “This has worked out well and Matthews has expressed an interest in continuing the tradition we’ve started.”

Matthews representatives will be at the Mustang Rally to experience the event for the first time.

“We’re looking forward to a great show this year where people can have a good, safe time,” said Tyrrell.
