NHS student wins award for volunteerism

NORWICH – Ian Weaver, of Norwich High School, recently received a Student Community Service Award and a $1,000 scholarship for his commitment to volunteerism.

Weaver has volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the YMCA, YES! LEADS, and as a math tutor. Through his experiences, the student said he learned “to genuinely care for others, possibly one of the most important things I’ve ever learned.”

The award and scholarship is given every year through a partnership between New York Senator Tom Libous, Broome-Tioga BOCES and WBNG-TV.

“Volunteering is not about dollars and cents. It’s about smiles and hugs and knowing we’ve helped someone. It’s about giving instead of taking. It’s something that money can’t buy,” said Sen. Libous, who partnered with the two organizations to create the scholarship.
