Clinton outlasts S-E in 9 innings

Evening Sun Report

Clinton 3, Sherburne-Earlville 1 (9 innings)

SHERBURNE – Clinton’s Austin Bouse hit a one-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth to provide the margin of victory in Wednesday’s extra innings victory over Sherburne-Earlville.

Anthony Rizzo pitched three scoreless innings for the win. He worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the eighth inning to keep his team’s victory hopes alive.

“It was a great game, and our kids have nothing to be ashamed of,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “It was a tough one for Mike (Wilson, S-E pitcher) to lose.”

Wilson pitched all nine innings and allowed just four hits in the loss.

The Marauders’ lone run came in the fourth, and it was an answer to Clinton’s first run in the top half of the inning. Carter Cole singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Cole scored on Mick Khoury’s single to right field.

S-E hosts Mount Markham on Friday.

Unadilla Valley 7, Sidney 6

SIDNEY – Unadilla Valley bounced back from a loss to Unatego on Monday defeating defending MAC champion Sidney on Tuesday afternoon.

UV broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh. Justin Hofer singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and came home on an error. Brandon Miles also scored for the Storm, courtesy of a Sidney wild pitch.

Sidney cut the lead in half in the last of the seventh, but a defensive gem by Hofer preserved the lead. Damian Zimmer laced a deep flyball to right-center that Hofer tracked down for the out. “Hoff covered a lot of ground all night, but that was a gem,” said UV coach Gary Alford. “I was proud of the boys tonight. To beat Sidney at anything is an accomplishment. They have some really good athletes down there.”

Nate Shackelton and Brett Smith had single runs batted in for UV, and Kurt Haycook doubled and scored one run.

Brandon Miles pitched six innings for the victory, and Smith finished the seventh for the save.
