Sherburne-Earlville 52, General Brown 49

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville avoided a second straight first-round Section III tournament exit turning back General Brown Friday night in Class B play.

General Brown, down eight points to start the fourth, hit two free throws with less than two minutes to play to take a 49-47 lead over the Marauders.

S-E (15-4) remained poised, and worked the ball to sophomore Jordan Van Althuis, who drained her fourth three ball of the game pushing her club back in front. Following a defensive stop of General Brown, Sierra Morris canned a long jumper for the final margin.

“(General Brown) certainly had the momentum in the fourth, but our kids stayed composed, and we hit two big shots at the end,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “To come through at this time of the year with the game on the line, I hope this helps us for the next game.”

Van Althuis had a game-high 20 points. Cassie Beaver finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 boards. Point guard Briana Vibbard did not score, but picked up nine steals and handed out 10 assists.

The Marauders will play the winner of Jordan-Elbridge or Skaneateles at a neutral site this week in the B-2 semifinals.
