Cooperstown runs past Marauders

Cooperstown 77, Sherburne-Earlville 46

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville may not play a Class B team in the Section III tournament that is as good as Class C Cooperstown.

The state-ranked Redskins are that good.

Sherburne-Earlville gained some confidence in the first minute of the third quarter closing Cooperstown’s lead to 33-30 after Austin Jasper’s layup. Over the last seven minutes of the quarter, the momentum of the game went decidedly Cooperstown’s way.

Mike Moakler had 10 points in a 24-4 run to end the quarter, and the Marauders committed six of their 27 turnovers as the contest quickly slipped away. Cooperstown built its lead to as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter, and was nearly perfect in every aspect of the game finishing with 15 straight made free throws.

“They’re like that. They can get hot, and they’re all good shooters,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard of Cooperstown. “We need to play almost a perfect game to beat them. But we turned it over too much, and that led to some easy buckets for them.”

Jeff Flynn came off the bench to score 14 points, and he hit a single three-pointer in each of the quarters. Point guard Jay Davine scored nine points, but easily assisted on at least double that number of points, plus he pocketed about a half-dozen steals as the front man on a harassing defense. “They have just about everyone back from last year’s team that reached the sectional finals,” Vibbard said. “They’re experienced, and they’re good.”

The Marauders led 12-10 at the first turn with Paul Romanenko and Cole Hodges each sinking a pair buckets. Romanenko’s second three of the first half moved S-E in front 15-12 before Cooperstown rattled off nine straight points to take the lead for good. Harrison Clinton hit two three-pointers in the second stanza, and Flynn added another trey.

Randy Briggs scored 12 points to top the Marauders, who host Marcellus Tuesday night in the first round of the Section III playoffs. Romanenko added 10 markers.
