Coventry to host special Civil War recognition event

COVENTRY – The Chenango County Civil War Commemorative Society will hold a kick-off event for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War on Oct. 9 at the Coventry Congregational Church.

The event is actually in conjunction with the Coventry Town Museum association’s annual Civil War recognition and will last from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year, Coventry will be honoring Henry Andrews, from the NYS 114th regiment.

Last year, 130 of Andrews’ letters were given to Greene Historian Nancy Bromley by James Blakeslee, a descendant of Andrews.

“It was so exciting to receive such an amazing treasure,” said Bromley. Blakeslee will be at the event to answer questions about his ancestor and Bromley will read excerpts from the letters.
