OXFORD – Oxford may not be on the list of fire departments from Chenango who have sent crews to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, but that doesn’t mean the volunteer department isn’t doing its part to aid New Yorkers hardest hit by the storm.

This weekend, the Oxford Fire Department will hold a donation drive to collect new items to be distributed in neighboring counties, where residents are still struggling to clean up in the wake of the flooding caused by the tropical storm system.

“With school starting soon, one of the biggest needs is back to school supplies,” said Tim Wakefield, who has helped organize the drive. “And, as with any disaster, they are in need of cleaning supplies, wipes, rubber gloves, disposable masks, toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, bottled water, new clothing, etc.”

According to Wakefield, cash donations will also be accepted, and will be used to purchase needed items for the distribution.

Items can be dropped off at the Oxford Fire Station between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday. For more information or to arrange an alternate drop off time, contact Wakefield at 843-8337.
