WALTON (AP) – A Norwich resident was involved in an apparent murder-suicide shooting in Walton over the weekend.

Richard “Dick” F. Utter, 74, of Mead’s Pond Trailer Park in Norwich, allegedly shot Daisy Schultz, 65, of Walton, and then turned the gun on himself, according to Walton Police. The incident took place Sunday at Schultz’ 32 Union St. apartment in Walton.

Utter, a widower and longtime Norwich Fire Department member who was dating Schultz, allegedly shot her several times and then killed himself, police said. Schultz’ death was ruled a homicide.

Authorities say neighbors heard the gunshots and called 911. Police say the two had been in a relationship since last fall.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police assisted in the investigation, which is ongoing.

A memorial service for Utter will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home in Norwich. A complete obituary will appear in a later edition of The Evening Sun.
