Forks racks up runs early against Tornado

Chenango Forks 12, Norwich 4

NORWICH – Chenango Forks got off the bus ready to hit Norwich pitching on Monday. The Blue Devils scored all 12 of their runs in the opening four innings to claim a STAC victory over the Tornado batsmen.

“They’re a very good hitting club, and I was very impressed with their patience at the plate,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “They were hitting ‘their’ pitches, and we struggled against Dybas (Tom).”

While his offense was churning, Dybas logged five innings for the win. He struck out six and allowed just two Norwich hits.

D.J. Smith topped the Forks offense with a home run, a triple, and two RBI.

Josh Borfitz led Norwich combining a double and triple into a two-RBI day.

Oxford 7, Hancock 3

OXFORD – Coming off some lopsided losses late last week, Oxford shored up its defense and pitching, and won for the first time this season on Monday night.

After Hancock scored two runs in the first, Oxford answered with two of its own. Hancock again put a run on the board in the second before the Blackhawks tied and took the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame.

“Answering their two runs in the first was key for us from a momentum standpoint,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “Taking the lead was huge. After last week, just being in a ballgame and feeling like we could win was important.”

Ryan Moore scored Kyle Ferrington with a sacrifice fly in the first, and Derrick Head’s RBI single tied the game. In the second, Chris Covey and Ferrington had back-to-back RBI groundouts giving Oxford the lead.

Ferrington struck out five and walked three for a complete-game win, and the Blackhawks took advantage of three Hancock errors in the fifth to pad the advantage with three more runs.

Oxford (1-4) plays at Harpursville Wednesday.
