Millie retires, diner changes hands

NORWICH – Millie’s Diner, a long-time city fixture, officially closed its doors yesterday, but will reopen next Tuesday, Februrary 23, under new ownership, according to longtime owner Millie Mercurio.

Originally known as Benny and Millie’s Diner, the little red caboose on East Main Street first opened in September of 1976, serving traditional diner fare and quickly becoming a favorite local hang-out.

“It’s amazing all the people that have gathered here through the years,” said Andrew Gracin, a long-time customer who remembered when the diner first opened. “This was always a great place to meet people and make conversation. We’re sure going to miss her.”

Mercurio stated that she’s not planning on sitting idle for long however, and said she plans on finding a part-time job, or at least “something to keep me busy.”
