SHERBURNE – Before its home crowd, Sherburne-Earlville won its first sectional class tournament in 26 years, and did so in an underdog role Saturday night.

The Marauders overcame state-ranked General Brown, Adirondack, and Mohawk to place first in the Section III, Class C tourney scoring 180.5 points, six better than pre-tournament favorite General Brown.

S-E was also the fourth Chenango County team to win a sectional class tournament this past weekend. “It was just unbelievable for us to win, and just a great team effort,” said S-E assistant coach, Brian Hicks. “Not just the wrestling, with the parents and everyone that helped out, it allowed us to focus on the kids wrestling.”

Tyi Franklin (26-3) gave S-E one of its two titles winning at 103 pounds with a 14-6 decision win over Tim Fargo of Lowville. Greg DuVall (29-0) stayed unbeaten winning the 135-pound title by third-period pinfall. Overall, S-E had nine wrestlers place in the top four, all of whom earned trips to the Section III small school sectional championships.
